When newspaper archives meet Twitter

National Public Radio is marrying its extensive story archive with Twitter to provide background on current stories, according to the Christian Science Monitor . “Through a little Web magic, the system monitors popular news topics, searches the archive for related stories, and sends links to users through an automated Twitter account—follow NPRBackstory to get in on the action,” Andrew Heining said in CSM .

Here’s a list from the archives (unearthed recently by  Inc. magazine). It’s a collection of actual out-of-office replies, compiled by Dave Duarte, a South African social media marketer. Here’s a doozy from the list: “Sorry to have missed you, but I am at the doctor’s having my brain removed so I can be promoted to our management team.” Nice.

Eesh! A tipster sent the Gawker blog an applicant’s cover letter for a digital account manager position. Oh. My. This candidate is confident and bold — very bold. Although Gawker didn’t publish the entire cover letter, it did post excerpts. For instance, “I don’t just think outside the box, I stand on top of it. I aim to appease my employer.
